    Description

Ninth plate ambrotype of a young man in an open hanging case (just under 2 ½” by 3”), circa 1850s to 1860s. The glass that covered the ambrotype image is gone and the photograph is damaged (open to air and not protected from touch). The ambrotype itself is in poor condition because of this, but the brass mat and the hanging case are not adversely affected. The case has a brass ring at the top so it could be hung on the wall or in a cabinet. There’s a strip of red felt like material lining the inside edges and blue paper behind the photograph. The brass mat and frame and the case are in good condition with only minor issues but not significant damage. Note the wear and rubbing at the back corners of the case. Get rid of the ambrotype and use this case for a better image, perhaps of a Civil War soldier or an ancestor! Nice simple early hanging photograph case!
