ZSA ZSA GABOR - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 07/29/1952 - HFSID 165688
ZSA ZSA GABOR
The actress discusses her relationship with director John Huston in this signed letter
TLS: "
love Zsazsa
", 2p, 6¼x7¾, separate sheets.
London, 1952 July 29.
On letterhead of the Savoy Hotel London to unknown recipient (name has been cut out in two places).
In full
: "
I am terribly unhappy reading all that utter nonsense from Louella Parsons and Graham that John Huston and I have been having misunderstandings. He is the nicest, sweetest director anyone could have and he treats me just like an angel. The picture is going to be an absolute knock-out,
but even so it is taking a long time to make and it looks as thought I will never be back before the end of September. I keep on communing (sic, commuting) between Paris and London as
Schiaparelli is making my clothes for the picture
, and my dresses, by the way, are absolutely breath-taking. I hope you miss me there. I must say I miss you all very much and
it's been more fun making a picture in America than here. I am having all kinds of exciting dates
but thank goodness I haven't lost my heart or my head yet, but just wait!
[missing]
darling, do me a favour.
You always tell me how much Louella likes me, so please try to arrange that she has something in her column saying how nicely we get along and how beautifully the picture is going.
I have to go back to Paris tomorrow for the final fitting and will probably be back at the end of the week, staying here most of the time and working hard. I hope you feel well and have a big rest from me. I miss you all very much again.
"
Typewritten postscript:
"
P.S. Please write to me.
"
At the time of this letter, Gabor was filming her role as Jane Avril in
Moulin Rouge
,
a fictionalized account of the loves of French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec that was
directed by John Huston.
The film,
true to Gabor's prediction, was "
an absolute knock-out
", winning Academy Awards
for Best Art Direction-Set Direction and Best Costume Design.
Moulin Rouge
was also
nominated for Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (Huston), Best Actor in a Leading Role (José Ferrer), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Colette Marchand) and Best Film Editing. LOUELLA PARSONS
(1881-1972) was a
Hollywood gossip columnist
who became one of the most powerful voices in the movie industry during the 1940s and 1950s. Graham was probably
VIRGINIA GRAHAM
(1912-1998),
a radio (and later TV) talk show host. It is interesting that Gabor mentions having "
all kinds of exciting dates
" - at the time of this letter, she was married to her third husband (1949-1954), actor George Sanders.
A minor actress but major Hollywood celebrity,
ZSA ZSA GABOR (1917-2016)
was Miss Hungary in 1936.
She moved to the United States just like her sisters Eva and Magda.
Zsa Zsa made her film debut in
Lovely to Look At
in 1952, the year she gave a well-received performance in
Moulin Rouge
.
She starred in the cult favorite
Queen of Outer Space
(1958) as well as other features. On television, she's best known as a frequent guest on
The Hollywood Squares
(1966-1975). She was a popular figure on the talk show circuit, making numerous appearances on
The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson
and
The Late Show with David Letterman
.
Known for her trademark "dahlink", she also made frequent headlines with nine marriages, politically incorrect furs, and spats with the police.
Her husbands included hotelier Conrad Hilton (1942-1947), actors George Sanders (1949-1954), Jack Ryan (1976-1982), and Felipe de Alba (1983, annulled), and German Frédéric von Anhalt (1986-present), who purchased the title of Prince Frederic of Anhalt via an adoption. Lightly creased with fold, mid-horizontal fold underlines signature. Staple holes at upper left blank corners. Fine condition.
